Incorporating several different styles within one painting, my intention was to demonstrate the transition between logical thought and creativity – and the consequent freedom that can be found through ‘thinking outside the box’. Influenced by Rene Magritte’s use of symbolism, I have used the image of an egg repeatedly in this piece. The egg is intended to represent new life, opportunity and mystery. I want the viewer to question its purpose and meaning. ‘Why is the egg important?’, ‘Is the egg concealing something?’ ‘Is the egg confining something or protecting something?’, ‘What is inside the shell, and what is its potential?’. The figures at the bottom of the painting see the egg as a shell, or barrier. I wanted to demonstrate pessimism and used muted, dark colours and a realistic style to portray a lack of creativity. The repetition of the image of an egg is important because it shows the different way a person can respond to the same object, depending on their mood/situation/prejudice. This piece explores negative prejudice and how, with a little imagination, we can see through the boundaries of logic - creating an opportunity for the impossible and unlocking hidden potential
Saw this in situ at Burnley College. Up close the detail was fantastic. I love this painting. Standing in front of it always revealed a new detail, a brush stroke or a shadow that added to the overall picture. Excellent.
Beautiful painting! Love the dynamic between the guy tightly gripping and analyzing/examining the egg on the right and the guy in a more loose/fluid pose on the left.
this is a highly unsophisticated comment, but your painting is so awesome it made me poop my pants.
The background has a great looking texture and the composition and posturing of the subjects in the painting really express movement and emotion. I love a good piece of traditional work. Keep it up.
